Brian May Condemns "Vitriol" Of Oscars Coverage

Queen guitarist Brian May is happy to have his Oscar for the band's Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, but he's also relieved that awards season is over.

May explained in a lengthy Instagram post over the weekend the dismay he felt watching and reading media coverage leading up to the Oscars. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said he was shocked at the negativity, "vitriol and dishonesty" surrounding the awards.

After his band opened the Oscars in a way that had never been done before, performing "We Will Rock Your" and "We Are the Champions," and after his film took home four Oscars, May said he was in no mood to party. He described an inescapably icky feeling about the whole ordeal — that somehow the success of Bohemian Rhapsody had made him an enemy of film lovers everywhere.

All he did was make a movie about his friend; he didn't expect it would be the highest-grossing music biopic of all-time or a Golden Globe and Oscar-winning film.

The majority of Oscars coverage was "aimed at discrediting one or other, or all of the nominated films by innuendo and smears, rather than discussing their merits and admiring the skills that went into making them," May says. And media members attempted to "shame and influence the members into voting the way they, in their arrogance, required them to."

He continued that it was all a symptom of a kind of "vindictive sickness that seems to have gripped public life" around the world.

The guitarist says he purposely avoided making public statements leading up to the Oscars to avoid influencing the awards.

He shared a Spectator article titled "Bohemian Rhapsody's Oscars win is a triumph over snobby film critics" that showed he was not the only one feeling exhausted by the Academy Awards maelstrom.

"Now I don't have to explain," May said, referring to the article. "It's all here."
